About the Artist

Sathya N Prabhu

Sathya N. Prabhu grew up in Nagercoil, Kanyakumari district, at the southern tip of Tamil Nadu. Her love for art began in childhood, inspired by her sister and husband, both of whom have a natural talent for drawing.

After marriage, her interest in painting grew deeper. She had the opportunity to learn drawing from an artist for a few months and continued to practise and explore art independently for several years. During this period, she became fascinated by the rich visual language of Nayaka murals, particularly the magnificent paintings of the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple.

Feeling the need for a deeper understanding and stronger artistic foundation, she began her formal education in Fine Arts at the age of 44, completing her BFA followed by an MFA. This marked an important turning point in her journey and helped her develop her own artistic language.

Working primarily with layers of acrylic paint, Sathya creates vibrant, earthy colours and richly textured surfaces. Her paintings draw from everyday life, memories, village traditions and Hindu mythology, bringing familiar subjects into a contemporary visual language.

Her figures and narratives often carry warmth and playfulness, while expressive colours and layered textures invite the viewer to look beyond the surface and connect with the emotions within each work.

Her paintings are an ongoing conversation between tradition and contemporary life — shaped by what she sees, remembers and feels.

About My Work

I paint the world I carry within me. Growing up in southern Tamil Nadu, I was surrounded by the colours, faces, rituals and rhythms of village life—women in their everyday moments, festivals filled with energy, folk traditions, agriculture and stories passed from one generation to another. Over time, these experiences became memories that stayed with me. They return not as photographs, but as fragments of feeling—a gesture, a face, a celebration, a fleeting moment. These fragments become the starting point of my paintings.

Through layers of acrylic, expressive colour and rich texture, I transform these memories into contemporary visual stories. I am not interested in simply recording what was; I want to bring back what lingers within us. My paintings create a space where tradition meets imagination, where the familiar becomes dreamlike, and where every figure and colour carries an emotion. At the heart of my work is a continuing exploration of identity, belonging, memory and the changing world, inviting the viewer to look beyond the surface and discover their own connection to the story.
