About this Painting
He has given up everything. His kingdom, his palace, his divine form. He walks the cremation grounds with a begging bowl, his body smeared with ash, his beauty so absolute that no one who sees him can look away. This is Bhikshatanar — Shiva as the supreme wandering ascetic, the god who chose poverty and the burning ground over all the wealth of the cosmos, and became more magnificent for it.
Artist Sathya N Prabhu renders this most esoteric and compelling of Shiva’s forms with the devotional depth, classical figurative power, and sacred reverence that defines her sacred art. Bhikshatanar is a painting steeped in the Shaivite tradition of Tamil Nadu — the god stripped of everything, and therefore more completely himself than in any other form. It is a painting about the paradox at the heart of Shaivism: that the greatest god is also the greatest renunciant, and that true power needs nothing at all.
